7 tips for maintaining your electric bike battery

The battery is an important part of your electric bike. Here are a few tips to keep it in perfect condition.

Tip 1: Charge your bicycle battery as soon as possible

Is your battery empty? Then insert the battery into the charger as soon as possible. If you don't do this, it increases the chance that the battery will go into a 'deep discharge' due to self-discharge. When deep discharge occurs, the battery can no longer be recharged and unfortunately has to be replaced.

Tip 2: Charge your bicycle battery at least once a month

In addition to charging when the battery is empty, it is also useful to charge the battery at regular intervals. Even if it is hardly used, such as during the winter. Recharge your battery at least every 6 weeks. Important: also make a short ride. It will warm you up!

Tip 3: Do you make many short trips? Do not charge the battery after every ride

It is important to charge the battery frequently, but only when necessary. Do not overdo it. Frequently fully charging a battery has a detrimental effect on its service life. If you mainly make short trips of less than 5 km, charge the battery after 2 or 3 trips.

Tip 4: Do not leave the charger permanently connected to the bike battery

Keep the charger connected for a day (or night) at most, and then disconnect it from both the battery and the mains. Cycling batteries that are charged to 90% or 95% wear out less quickly and therefore last longer than cycling batteries that are fully charged and remain so. Not only does this help the environment, it also saves on energy costs.

Tip 5: Store the bicycle battery free of frost and moisture

Avoid temperatures below freezing. However, the cold is not such a bad thing when it comes to storing batteries. So there's no harm in storing the bike battery in a garage or shed during the winter. Colder temperatures slow down the natural ageing process of the battery. Temperatures below freezing are best avoided, however, partly because of possible condensation. Electronics and moisture do not mix well.

Tip 6: Never charge the bike battery at temperatures below freezing

Batteries should only be charged at temperatures above freezing. Charging below freezing results in a chemical process that causes irreversible damage and negatively affects the life of the battery. A harsh winter? Charge the battery indoors.

Tip 7 : Only use chargers that are suitable for your bike battery

Do not use power supplies or chargers designed for other battery technologies, as this can seriously damage the battery, sometimes with dangerous results.
