5 tips to avoid traffic jams

Despite the continued impact of telecommuting since corona, congestion is again higher then in 2019. What's more, October 2022 was the second heaviest month of October since measurements were taken in 2011. Are you tired of those traffic jams? We'll give you 5 essential tips to avoid them.

Tip 1: Plan your travel time

If you want to avoid traffic jams, it's best to leave for work outside rush hours. It's better not to travel on public roads between 7a.m. and 9 a.m. or 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. So if possible, work from home first. Also plan your days to work from home on Tuesdays or Thursdays, as these are the busiest congestion days.

Tip 2: Choose combimobility

Combimobility is combining different types of transportation to get to your destination. For example, you go by bike to the station or you drive your car to a park & ride and then take the bus. This way you avoid busy traffic jams and arrive at work stress-free.

Tip 3: Find the best route

You save a lot of time by planning the right route in advance. Depending on your chosen mode of transportation, there are several apps or websites that can help you do this:

  • Car: Waze tells you where the traffic jams are and offers you an alternative route.
  • Combimobility: Hoppin bundles different transportation solutions to get travelers to their destinations as efficiently as possible.
  • Bicycle: there is an extensive network of bicycle highways to get to your final destination smoothly by bike.

Tip 4: Hop on your bike

The ultimate tip to avoiding traffic jams? Trade in your car for an (electric) bike. Which kind of bike you choose, depends on the distance to work.

  • <10km: for this distance a non-electric bike is certainly suitable, unless you still like the luxury of an electric bike.
  • 10-20km: for this distance you should choose an electric bike if you want to get to work as quickly as possible. Choose a 'standard' electric bike (max. 25km/hour) for your commute or a cargo bike if you want to transport cargo or your kids.
  • >20km: thanks to a speed pedelec, you can now cover longer distances to work. These bikes go up to 45km/hour and save you a lot of traffic jam time.

Tip 5 : Work closer to home

Employees with a stressful commute are more likely to look for other work. Are you sick of standing in traffic and can't you cover the distance by bike? Then maybe it's best to look for a job closer to home.
